Mayor Nutter will ask City Council on Thursday to approve a 9.3 percent increase in property taxes to fund the beleaguered School District.
In his final budget address as mayor, Nutter will ask Council - in an election year - to approve a $3.95 billion spending plan that would raise property owners' taxes by hundreds or even thousands of dollars a year.
Currently, the tax bill for a home assessed at the median of $113,000 is $1,112. If Nutter's proposal was approved, it would go up to $1,216.
Details of the budget were disclosed to Council members Wednesday morning in a three-page brief that was subsequently obtained by The Inquirer. The administration declined to comment on the record about the budget, saying it would wait until the mayor's address....

I have always enjoyed hearing the Philadelphia Mayor’s last name. Nutter describes most of the Democrats. There isn’t a school district in America that has enough money. Taxpayers could give them 100% of their earnings and the schools would continue to cry they don’t have enough.
Yes, he is well named.
Have you ever known an “educator” who didn’t gripe about their “low” pay and “poor” benefits? Meh!
God forbid they cut spending. I don’t know what they spend money on. It certainly isn’t plowing snow off the roads or fixing potholes.
Throw out the Illegals you’ll have Tons of money
Yup, we’ll pay those taxes right after Nutter fires each and every administrative puke in his city associated with education.
How does one tell an admin puke?
Look for folks who had even lower SAT scores than did the teachers.
(But not as low as the city’s politicians, of course. No one has lower scores than those vermin.)
..... IS more money......
One of the best headlines ever!
Is that the ENTIRE property tax amount, or just to the city?
It seems lower than I would have expected for Phila Penna.
9.3 percent increase in property taxes to fund the beleaguered School teachers pensions!!!
YOU cannot afford to retire as these city and state and federal people are being funded by YOU.
Wish I was in Philly.
The dumb voters in Washington state passed a “do it for the children” school funding ballot issue last fall and my property taxes have gone up 15% since last year.
I’ve been following politics and government for nearly 60 years. In all that time, I’ve NEVER, EVER heard ANY government body - local, state, or federal - say they have enough.
” Yes, he is well named.”
The only better one is Sen Jeff Flake.
Yeah, even the higher amount would be half what the taxes would be in MI.
“There isnt a school district in America that has enough money. Taxpayers could give them 100% of their earnings and the schools would continue to cry they dont have enough.
“
Post of the Day!
Agreed. Let me add to that, get rid of half the "administrators" and their "assistants" along with their paid for cell phones, laptops, cars, gas credit cards, and expense accounts, and you'll have more money than you know what to do with.
Philadelphia. Run by mega-liberals. They only have one solution for everything. And every solution is mandatory compliance-based too.
NJ had the same problem until our property tax increases were capped at 2%; now when teachers get 5% raises a bunch of young untenured parasites lose their jobs...
