New Zealand is conducting mass surveillance over its Pacific neighbours, reports citing documents leaked by US whistleblower Edward Snowden say.
Calls, emails and social media messages were being collected from Pacific nations, the New Zealand Herald said.
The data was shared with other members of the "Five Eyes" network - the US, Australia, Britain and Canada.

Looking for topless natives? Mutiny on Bounty?
MASS surveillance? Oh please.
This is what Snowden wants us to know this week? What? Nothing on some city council guy from Omaha? Nothing on NSA spying on a French movie star? Nothing with the head of Frankfurt’s city zoo? Pacific island intelligence collection? Are we counting turtles or doped-up American folks who fall off cruise vessels?
Good, I am glad. They should.
Spy away. NZ’s Air Force doesn’t have any fighters or bombers, so what are they going to do about whatever they find?
Well, do they at least have blimps?
I don’t see a problem there.
New Zealand has national security issues they need to address, just like any other civilized nation.
Why not Japan? Seems a more interesting subject...Hawaii is constantly surveyed (spied on).
NZ has an excellent immigration policy.
Obviously they are keeping a wary eye on the approaches.

Instead of illegals peppering our mainland, we should have secret immigration police in Mexico, Canada and other countries, as well as on the high seas.
They’re smart enough to not want another Cuba in their back yard.
“New Zealand has national security issues they need to address, just like any other civilized nation.”
Yeah, NZ is on the verge of invasion from the Maoris,,,
This is an example of how silly the “security state” mentality has become.
[That splatting noise your heard is the sound of your sarcasm falls flat]
However, I'm sure the people and the government of New Zealand will sleep better tonight knowing they have your personal assurance that muslim extremists in nearby Indonesia pose them no threat whatsoever.
Ok, the Hutus then,, but the point remains. Indonesia doesn’t even know where New Zealand is. More of the security state silliness. What would make you happy then, the personal communications of everyone on earth, monitored and captured? No privacy whatsoever?
If we play the “what if” panic game, why is a New Zealand citizen any less likely to go sudden jihad than an Indonesian?
That means they need to also monitor internally. (and most assuredly do given their Brit heritage mentality)
If we all must live under such a big brother world, what exactly is being defended anyway?
That’s good hyperbole.
Are you thinking of going pro?
“I’m sure the people and the government of New Zealand will sleep better tonight knowing they have your personal assurance that muslim extremists in nearby Indonesia pose them no threat whatsoever.”
And what about the Chinese? Maybe the Japs go bad again? Tamil Tigers,,, who can REALLY say that they aren’t angry about New Zealand for something? And airliners make the world a very small place, maybe ISIS will be flying in. Also, Australia is friendly,,,,TODAY. But NZ cannot fail to notice that they are buying F-35s and subs. What if they went on a land grab or cut off NZ sea lanes and interfered with commercial Hoki fishing?
You know, really you’re right, NZ should be intercepting all the communications on earth. At least in their hemisphere. It the only safe thing to do. And safety is the ultimate goal of society,,,right?/
This has been going on for decades.
At first it was called Echelon which morphed into FiveEyes.
Technically, the five countries which make up FiveEyes can’t spy on their own people. So they spy on other countries and share the data with their FiveEye countries.
Go to the search link below to read about FiveEyes and Echelon:
It started back in the 1970’s when the NSA equipped the Canadian CSIS with the U.S. technology to use in the United States.
You are about 20+ years too late. Go to the link below to see the timeline of Echelon.
