Simon Winchester’s book, Krakatoa, describes how this Muslim incursion took place. The Dutch colonialists were slow to act after the devastating eruption and tsunami. Muslims who had been going to Mecca for the Haj for years, and some to Yemen afterwards for organizing and training, were quick to exploit the vacuum in rescue and services.
Regarding skiing on ash. I climbed close to the top of Popocatepetl in Mexico when young. The ash slopes were so steep it was 3 steps forward, two steps slide back. Great skiing potential, exhausting climb at 17,000 feet.
