South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co Ltd unveiled its latest Galaxy S smartphones, featuring a slim body made from aircraft-grade metal, in a bid to reclaim the throne of undisputed global smartphone leader from Apple Inc.
Designed from scratch in an operation dubbed "Project Zero", the Galaxy S6 and its curved-edges variant are critical for Samsung's plans to reverse plunging smartphone revenues that led to its first annual earnings fall in three years in 2014.
A warm initial reception sent Samsung shares rising as much as 3.9 percent on Monday to their highest in nearly nine months. Some technology publications described the phones as Samsung's best-looking to date after its previous flagship device, the Galaxy S5, failed to impress.

Lumia 1020 is by far the best cameras on a phone.
I don’t know why phone makers are shying away from external storage. I would love to have is a phone that, with one click or two, allows me to automatically save a movie file that I downloaded onto an external sd card that I could then watch on a flight or in my hotel.room.
And thus like normal consumers, we’ll get fed up and look elsewhere.
If we were Apple-bots, we’d say it was for some good reason, change our thoughts appropriately, and continue to worship at the creepy little shrine in our basements.
Probably, but you have to use Windows,,, no thanks. I couldn’t ask more from a camera than my Samsung gives. And a little odd, my Samsung 10.1 tab has the best camera of all.
People are shocked at the photos I’ve taken with both.
And one of the apple fanboys here had a solid point, you absolutely cannot decide the best camera with mere megapixel counts.
I just upgraded from the s3 to my Note 4, which I love btw. I had considered waiting for s6, but grew concerned abt the rumors regarding battery and sd card. So glad I didn’t wait!
They will lose me for my next upgrade if they truly have abandoned swappable battery/sd card.
“And thus like normal consumers, well get fed up and look elsewhere.”
True,,, I’ve been thinking of a note4 since I really don’t use my 10.1 tab much anymore. That might get me a few years down the road with removable memory.
One of my friends has a Lumia 635 I believe, it shoots really good in bad lighting so he keeps it. Not bad for a non contract phone. Then again, it’s his “i have multiple girlfriends phone so i won’t use my real phone and number” so it’s another reason why he still has it..
I can do that with my S5. I have it auto selected to store on the SD card as default. Just downloaded the VLC player so any format is likely supported.
Lol, I usually upgrade when its for free. A couple of hundred dollars for a cellphone that will have a new version in a year is way too pricey!
Right. I didn’t get mine for free but it was 1¢ out of contract and I had to jump through hoops to get that as I have a grandfathered deal with Sprint in a SERO plan and usually the only upgrade path is through Sprint in order to retain that plan.
I love my Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and I loved my last three Samsung phones so this announcement just makes me want to..........scream.
Locked in battery? Locked in memory???
Why don’t I just buy an iPhone? Better yet, HTC here I come.
>> the Galaxy S6 and its curved-edges variant are critical for Samsung’s plans to reverse plunging smartphone revenues
I prefer the conservative footprint of the iPhone 5S with its slender but rigid right edge.
Oh dear. EPIC stupid. Removable battery and micro SD are the ONLY reason I buy Samsungs.
Perhaps this is their way of moving the “old” inventory. As soon as the S5s are sold they’ll introduce the S7 with removable batt and sd card (I can dream, can’t I?).
Idiots.
I beg to differ.
It’s probably because in their testing the battery lasts long enough for most people.
Amen. Love this phone. 41 megapixels in a phone. AND it has both mechanical image stabilization (i.e., floating lens) and electronic image stabilization (i.e., software driven).
And does an incredible job of taking photos in almost pitch black conditions. Nokia's software is the key. Zeiss lens and both Xenon and LED flashes don't hurt either.
Okay that's funny!
My neighbor is a professional photographer and uses his S4 for his hobby shooting. They have tremendous cameras. I love my iPhone 5s, but I cannot take night photos at all, or at least what I'd like to take photos of, like moody moon shots. Utter crap. BUT, I didn't buy it for the camera.
The iPhone 6 plus is next on my list because they did improve the camera somewhat, but I need the real estate. My fat fingers aren't getting any less fat, and my eyes aren't getting any better.
I don't like the Samsung way of doing things OS-wise. It's far clunky-ier to get around. So, why am I on this thread? To learn.
To beat iPhone, Samsung needs something different. Like a phone where the entire surface, front, back, and sides, is screen.
Disposable Razers, once it’s useful life is over they want you to buy another, then buy another one, then buy another one.
Note 4 ? Now you can go to Best Buy and get the Samsung Gear VR and enjoy VR.
Wished they didn’t make so you had to buy a Note 4 to use Samsung Gear VR.
