n a windowless classroom at an Arcadia tutoring center, parents crammed into child-sized desks and dug through their pockets and purses for pens as Ann Lee launches a PowerPoint presentation.
Her primer on college admissions begins with the basics: application deadlines, the relative virtues of the SAT versus the ACT and how many Advanced Placement tests to take.
Then she eases into a potentially incendiary topic — one that many counselors like her have learned they cannot avoid.
“Let's talk about Asians,” she says.
Lee's next slide shows three columns of numbers from a Princeton University study that tried to measure how race and ethnicity affect admissions by using SAT scores as a benchmark. It uses the term “bonus” to describe how many extra SAT points an applicant's race is worth. She points to the first column.
African Americans received a “bonus” of 230 points, Lee says. Asian Americans would lose out under affirmative action Asian Americans would lose out under affirmative action
She points to the second column.
“Hispanics received a bonus of 185 points.”
The last column draws gasps.
Asian Americans, Lee says, are penalized by 50 points — in other words, they had to do that much better to win admission.
“Do Asians need higher test scores? Is it harder for Asians to get into college? The answer is yes,” Lee says.

A lot of Asian Americans were born here, went to USA High Schools (the same ones your kids went to) and graduated at the top of their classes.
I know because I interview for my college.
Lots of foreigners come study in American universities. No shame in that for them, is there? No reason why americans shouldn't study at fine institutions in China which are 5% better than Princeton, run by people that are, as you say, 5% smarted than everyone else. Sounds like they would be places that a hard-studying 5% smarter than eveyone else chinese-american needs to be.

You are so correct in calling this idiocy. The hatred of college administrators toward traditional common sense is Orwellian as everything they act on seems to be just opposite to any principles of normal logic. No nation can survive under such idiocy. We are on the verge of coming under dictatorship which the academics want because they think they will be a part of the rule that way. They need to do an intense study of history to see how their ilk fares under such conditions. We all know why they do not want the brilliant in their colleges..It is because the brilliant tend not to be sheep and are less susceptible to brainwashing.
This is not an argument for lowering the standards for college admission which will prove to be very bad for this nation.
What makes the people who write these guidelines think that hiring managers won’t adjust SAT scores in the other direction? Sooner or later, these students are going to run into something that the administrators cannot fix.
Mr, Osgood..That is a very unfair and racist thing to say. There are many Chinese Americans who are just as American as you are. There are many families who have adopted children from China who are no different to them than their biological children. I know several of these families and their kids, none of whom fit your degrading description of wonderful and deserving human beings. We desperately need true equality in this nation and a merit system is the best way to achieve that. Give credit where credit is due. Anything else divides people and causes very bad feelings.
This is the great conundrum. Asians value education and it’s practical benefits. Their kids go to night prep schools after day school to give them the advantage. No midnight basketball or mall ratting. Superior preparation most often wins out
A majority of Asian-Americans vote for lib pols. This is the thanks they get, and it is what they deserve for voting for lib pols.
Why is it b.s.? A cursory study of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean students reveals many of them to be fanatics about study.

The evil that will ‘come of this’ is already here. This is PC, nothing more nothing less. PC has two elements of function. One is that ‘the rules’ come from the ether and the second is the acceptance of MULTIPLE and illogical truth in the minds of individuals. (This pretty much destroys the mind as a useful tool for problem solving)
There is reality which gets shunted off to the side for the operative ‘truth’ which is treated as if it were reality. This conditions the mind to accept bullshit AND to fear the real truth.
The damage of a half century of this political conditioning is manifested by the presence of a pretender in the White House. He could not have been considered for the presidency or run WITHOUT the assistance of the conditioned mind that is the result of PC enforcement. The nation would simply have rejected ANYONE white or black prior to the PC era. PC conditioning is why he can dismiss the rule of law without fear of consequences.
We have been played. It has already happened. There are no future consequences that we can avoid if we somehow stop being what we are and magically become what we were and rise up. The ship has sailed. We wait now for the shit to hit the fan.

It was posted a week ago...it’s a VERY IMPORTANT topic and one that could deliver conservatives MILLIONS of voters if Republican leaders would simply stop trusting their advisers (most of them gay, by the way).

The other thing is, no matter what kind of “bonus” these students get on paper, I doubt that many of these Ivy League schools will fundamentally change. It’s just lip service. The ones that will really suffer are the middle and lower tier state schools who can’t finesse the stats as well.
And, yet, most Asians are extremely liberal. Go figure.
What a country! if your genetic background favors high intelligence and your culture stresses hard work and achievement you are punished.
