Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) told the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) that he's learned he was wrong on his approach to immigration reform.
Rubio, a onetime Tea Party favorite whose support for a comprehensive immigration reform package hurt him with the GOP base, told the conservative crowd that he now understands U.S. borders must be secured before anything else can be done.
"It wasn't very popular, I don't know if you know that from some of the folks here," Rubio said with a smile, earning laughs from the crowd, when asked about his earlier support for the bill by Fox News host Sean Hannity.
"You have 10 or 12 million people in this country, many of whom have lived here for longer than a decade, have not otherwise violated our law other than immigration laws, I get all that," Rubio said. "But what I've learned is you can't even have a conversation about that until people believe and know, not just believe but it's proven to them that future illegal immigration will be controlled."
That tone is a big change from his support for the 2013 bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform bill that badly wounded him with the GOP base, though it's a return to the views he held before he joined the bipartisan group.
Rubio said recent border issues had proven his earlier approach was wrong, calling a border security first approach "the only way forward."
"You can't just tell people you're going to secure the border, we're going to do E-Verify. You have to do that, they have to see it, they have to see it working, and then they're going to have a reasonable conversation with you about the other parts, but they're not going to even want to talk about that until that's done first.

“Give the guy a chance to redeem himself.”
He had a chance. He had six years in the Senate to show that he had learned this lesson, yet he only conveniently learns it when he is up for re-election?
Rubio, Bush,,Christie = Globalist
Do not trust a Globalist. They are anti U.S. Constition and pro Global Government, open borders, pro carbon tax, pro rigg trade and are closet gun grabbers.
A rat Is more trustworthy than the above Globalist.
treason is not a mistake that can be forgiven; it must be punished.

I agree. When are we going to punish the treasonous bastard in the White House?
That’s up to God.
My elected representative has exactly one chance to lie to me, and he spent his.
He can go pander for the votes of illegals and fools now, because he isn’t going to get mine.
I will vote against this man.
Say, Rube—Were you lyin’ then, or are you lyin’ now?
How do we know we can trust you this time, Rubio, when you lied to us last time?
If Rubio listened to the people who put him in the Senate instead of Senators, he would have figured this out a long time ago.
That’s why its called...”We The People...”
Rubio said recent border issues had proven his earlier approach was wrong, calling a border security first approach “the only way forward.”
His prior position made former supporters really doubt his judgment.
It’s just common sense, at least among homeowners, that you would not start painting your basement walls with Killzit moisture/stain paint and replace the carpet, and so forth, if the walls are still leaking like sieves.
But the homeowner would start bailing water out ASAP, and guys like Rubio just didn’t seem to willing to concede this point. More importantly, they don’t seem willing to concede it now:
that the definition of “border security” (something like “moisture-proofing”) includes a nation deciding who is allowed in and allowed to stay, and who is excluded and chucked-out if they sneak in.
That may seem harsh but that’s exactly how Mexico and most nations handle border security, and with a lot less “compassion”.
This just shows that there is no change in his thinking. Hell or high water, once (or if) the border is secured... he *STILL* wants to grant shamnesty to criminaliens.
The only one that told the truth was Trump. He clued everyone in that Mexico is not our friend and we need to build a wall. Not a fence a wall. He’s right. I’m about ready to vote for Trump.
Rubio sounds good but can’t be trusted.
The rats need to fix Mexico rather than provide amnesty.
You have 10 or 12 million people in this country, many of whom have lived here for longer than a decade, have not otherwise violated our law other than immigration laws...
This is absolute BS and he knows it, or should. Illegal aliens MUST break myriad laws DAILY to further their illegal presence in our country. He is still sympathetic to the cause. Don’t let him fool you. He has not changed his mind on amnesty, he just figures if he can trick you into believeing they have actually done something about the border, then you’ll go for amnesty.
The path to U.S. citizenship begins in their home country. There IS NO path that starts here for illegal aliens. And there never should be. We should never reward illegal aliens and their employers. Remember, it is the employers that the GOP has been paid by to not enforce the borders and laws.
And the true number is more like 30 million. They have been saying 11-12 million for 15 years.
If he ever really changes his mind, let me know, he still wants amnesty for illegal aliens. He just thinks we can be fooled into it later if they act like they are doing something about the border.
Wise too late is a sad thing.
His wishy-washy doubleface makes this man a worthless go-along-to-get-along Hack.
Right there with Boehner, McSenator, Santorum and the rest.
I'm certain he has his place in politics but President isn't there. Imo, he's
only doing this for money like every other pathetic hack in DC. Screw him.
Correcto mundo, this boy has screwed the pooch one too many times for this ole Texan. He is done, finished, caput.
OK, not a problem. I see where both of you are coming from and both reasons are understandable. Follow your conscience.
It’s funny. I have a tin ear for Rubio, you flip-flopper.
