Vladimir Putin was regularly violent to his ex-wife Lyudmila during their marriage, a German documentary on the Russian leader has claimed.
Putin the Man, made by ZDF television and shown this week, claimed to have been given access to the unseen files of an unidentified Western intelligence agency. They included details of Mr Putins time as a young KGB officer stationed in Dresden in the Eighties, as well as his rise to power in Russia.
A secretary inside the Dresden office code-named Lehnchen, who befriended Mrs Putin, told how he used to beat his wife regularly.
Far from his image as a fitness fanatic today, the young Mr Putin was overweight and a heavy drinker, according to the documentary.
He was depressed, fat, lazy and disillusioned, Mahsa Gessen, an author and activist told the documentary. The files included the testimony of a woman identified as Mrs H who said Mr Putin groped her at a party, and that his colleagues blamed it on alcohol.
It was the collapse of his KGB career, caused by the fall of the Soviet Union, that made Mr Putin turn his life around and fight his way back to the centre of power, according to the documentary.
It presented new evidence that he has misrepresented an incident from 1989, when anti-Communist protesters tried to storm the KGB office in Dresden before the Berlin Wall fell. Mr Putin has always claimed that he talked the protesters down while posing as an interpreter. But Siegfried Dannath, one of the demonstrators, told the film-makers that Mr Putin had appeared in full uniform and told the crowd his men had orders to shoot.
That version was corroborated by Sergei Bezrukov, a former KGB colleague of Mr Putins.

Is that why Obama put sanctions on Russia?
At least his daughters are hot!
Don’t forget the blankets. And grief counselors. He sent both.
Well, the Kremlin helped build all the international Muslim terror networks as a proxy to use against the West, so no surprise that he wants to deflect criticism from them.
Sanctions don’t do anything to stop Putin and they only make the Russians support Putin more. Have the sanctions done anything to stop Putin? No.
I know, right? The American people know more about the secret KGB record of the Russian President, than they do about the college attendance of their own President.
What a world.
Have sanctions ever stopped any country from doing anything? Ever?
Anytime I hear “sanctions” I hear “we’re doing this for PR purposes only, because if we did anything effectual, it would lead to war, and we don’t want that”.
What is his name?
It’s funny how Putin has so many on this thread angry about these negative claims made against him.
Yes the West needs to show a strong front against Putin the KGB whack case who seems hell bent to bluff his way back to empire and into becoming a global threat again.
“claimed to have been given access to the unseen files of an unidentified Western intelligence agency”
Well if you cant trust THAT, what can you trust?
Best not to trust the Chekist mass murderer and war criminal Putin who is a proven pathological liar.
“Obama and Putin are comrades and butt buddies.”
That’s a great argument. Ahhhhh,,, I remember 4th grade,,, good times.
How about arguing that a Putin thread needs to be about Obama? We have a shortage of those around here?
I believe that Putin represents a grave threat to us. Of course, Obama does as well. But we need to watch Putin very closely.
... cruel, I know, but people can be that way ...
“Yes the West needs to show a strong front against Putin...”
Good luck with that. The only country in the West that can threaten Russia is the U.S., and our “Commander-In-Chief” seems more concerned about Christians getting on their “high horses” than anything Putin is doing.
You mean the 28 nation military alliance of NATO.
No, if I meant that, I would have written that. Nobody in the West can threaten Russia except for the U.S. It’s a simple fact if you look at the strength of the military forces we are talking about.
The U.S. will not challenge Russia, at least not as long as Obama is leading us, and without the U.S., NATO is absolutely no threat to Russia.
