The Oscars, Grammys, Emmys, SAG, Critics Choice, Golden Globes are determined by affiliated peers in each media. Hardly objective. What most people don't know is that studios lobby for their movies, TV shows, and recordings. I know because I used to be in the film industry. It's all a farce. The only award show I put in any credence in is the "People's Choice Awards". They are voted by us peons.
Also, contrary to some opinions, I don't believe an award should go to the biggest money maker. Top 5 grossing movies of 2014 with my humble opinion:
1. Guardians of the Galaxy; (haven't seen, but looks stupid and too CGI);
2. Hunger Games:Mocking Jay; (like the acting, but tired gov vs working class story);
3. Captain American:The Winter Soldier (puhlese, more unbelievable action CGI crap);
4. The Lego Movie; (if it works for young kids, okay);
5. Transformers: Age of Extinction; (the entire concept is just beyond inane and difficult to watch when the robots change);
The rest of biggest grosses are mostly tired remakes or sequals. What to see something worthwhile? Watch "The Theory of Everything". Interesting, heart-wrenching and uplifting. The guy deserved the best actor award. It's of the same caliber of "A Beautiful Mind" which Russel Crowe got shafted for best actor for Denzal Washington's "Training Day".
