The unsung heroes of your communitys police force are its capable K-9 unit. These talented pooches can serve alongside a police force for upwards of a decade.
As any pet owner knows, one of the hardest things in life is saying goodbye to your best friend.
Police in West Deptford, New Jersey had to do just that late last week.
Noted police dog Judge, who retired from active service in 2013, was given a heros farewell as he was walked into the vets office to be put down:

A House rule: Most dogs are better, more loyal and certainly less devious than most humans....by far.
Poor clueless doggie.
My poor clueless kitty is going to the vets this morning. I do not know at this point if she will come home alive or dead.
somehow i doubt the dog was clueless as to what was going to happen...they are very keen to what’s going to happen in the future...
I just had to put my 15 yr old buddy down last December, a very hard thing to do.
I miss that little guy.
That’s a neat story. Thanks for posting.
I am looking at my pack Beta (in her mind) at the moment and have to smile. I have a 5 year old lab that is the sweetest, most loyal dog I have known MOST OF THE TIME. When Alpha (me) is not around, and other members of her pack are out and about, she tends to have less patience with other animals and adults. She is also the best burglar alarm there is. I hate having to sneak in the house late (from work), trying not to wake anyone. It’s hopeless! I was once able to touch get my keys out at the front door before she “went off”.
I don’t look forward to the day we will have to say goodbye.
Right you are! So are most kitty cats.
Check out the dog's eyes... they know more than we think they know.
Brave dog. Those cops did good to see him off.
He looks healthy. I wonder why he has to be euthanized.
My Lab died on her bed in our house 11/2/2013. Amber was 13. She was the sweetest dog I ever had. It was hard. The fact is that if things work the way they should you will outlive your dog. I knew this when we got her. I have had 4 dogs in my life. The sorrow of losing a dog is part of having that dog as a loyal friend for the years they live.
Apparently he had been suffering from Cushings Disease.
There is a link to a detailed description of the condition in the article.
The officer said that this dog was his best friend, which I know all to well how hard it is to put your best friend down, so I trust that this decision was made very carefully and lovingly.
Judge had been suffering from Cushings Disease and, though it pained Cpl Mike Franks to admit, it was time...
Though Judge was extremely lethargic and could barely walk the days before the ceremony, he was able to bite onto his favorite protective decoy arm sleeve used in training and carry it into the hospital. Franks said.
I would rather outlive my dog then have my dog outlive me. I don’t want her to have to know what that is like.
This is one of the most important things that dogs can teach us, and that is how to say goodbye when goodbye is the last thing you want to say. Very hard.
That is a tough time for the dog’s owner. Been there. Done that, with an identical looking German shepherd, who was about 15 yrs old. It was one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done. God bless them both, and the officers who showed excellent respect.
I am reading the keywords attached to this thread and scratching my head...
I'm sure they were added by the FR posters that claim if you love animals you must also love aborted babies.
Really?
We have people like that around here?
We lost our 12 year old Rottweiler, Fritz, last summer. Big dogs don't live much longer than 10-12 years so we knew his time was nearing. First, he came up lame. We gave him some meds to ease the pain in his hips. But then, after a while, he couldn't get up. I sat with him and talked to him and petted him. I looked into his eyes and I could tell he was tired. Then the last straw was when he stopped eating. He knew the time was short and so did we. Again, the look in his eyes told us he was weary and ready to go. He ate once in 2 weeks so I knew it was time. He just laid under a shed all day and night and drank some water I gave him but otherwise, he was getting ready to die. The dog weighed 125 lbs and we couldn't manage to put him the back of my truck, so I spoke with the vet at the dairy next door one day and asked if he could come by and put the dog down. I never had to make that call to the vet because Fritz passed away that night.
So you see, the poor dog wasn't clueless. He knew and he, in his own way, told us he was dying and it was time to go. I have tears in my eyes as I write this because he was our best friend and constant companion for a dozen years. We shared many happy times together during his lifetime To soften the blow of his loss, we did what we usually do after losing a beloved pet. We got a new puppy, Corky. He is part Rottweiler and part something else. He was a rescue dog found wandering on the highway. But he is 11 months old now and is bringing us fun and joy to fill the void from our loss.
RIP Judge and Fritz.
