It appears that Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin believes he can shrug his way into being the Republican nominee for president. Journalists are quickly learning that if you ask Walker to comment on any of the issues that are riling up the fundamentalists, birthers or other right wingnuts these days, Walker will be respond with his impression of a popular emoticon: ¯\(ツ)/¯.
On the question of where he stands on the theory of evolution, Walker replied, That's a question politicians shouldn't be involved in one way or another. I am going to leave that up to you.
On the question of how he plans to handle ISIS: Thats certainly something I will answer in the United States in the future.
When asked if he thinks President Obama is a Christian: I dont know, and Ive never actually talked about it or I havent read about that.
Or if he thinks Obama loves America, which is a debate going on in conservative circles right now: Ive never asked the President so I dont really know what his opinions are on that one way or another.
Someone should ask Walker if he agrees when liberals say the sky is blue, just to see him tap dance around that one, too.
This entire situation is so comical that its hard to imagine its doing anything but hurting Walkers chances. Yet there is actually a method to his madness. While Democratic-leaning voters can be driven to distraction by politicians who refuse to take a side on contentious issues like this, the dodge-and-weave actually plays right into the hands of Republican voters, both of the Tea Party variety and the people who dont care for all that culture war nonsense and just want lower taxes on rich people.
Both stripes of Republican voters will likely take Walkers shruggie act as an indication that he secretly views things the way they do. For the rightwing ideologues, hearing Walker punt on issues like ISIS or whether or not Obama is a secret Muslim feeds right into their paranoid narratives about how the evil liberal media is suppressing rightwing truths. He secretly agrees with us, the narrative goes, but he cant say so out loud without being crucified by the liberal media.
For those Republicans who dont actually buy the birther narratives about Obama or who dont reject the theory of evolution, however, the signal sent by Walkers dunno posturing is a little different. To them, its: Hes not an imbecile, but he has to play to the rubes in order to win Iowa.
Thats why theres an excellent chance that Walkers little dance will work. Tea Party types get to have their victimization narrative flattered and elites get to have their sense that theyre bamboozling the rubes played to. Just as importantly, Walkers refusal to take a stand on any of this makes it easier for him to appear sensible and moderate to the public at large if he does win the nomination. If he was foolish enough to actually go on the record agreeing with some of the more outlandish ideas that fringe right puts forward, those quotes could catch the publics imagination in the way that Todd Akins legitimate rape or Mitt Romneys 47 percent comments did.
But nothing is hard to quote. And though I dont know may induce snickers, it doesnt stir outrage. Perhaps were heading towards an era when Republican candidates communicate primarily through subtle nods designed to mean whatever you need to believe they mean.

But what we really need to know about Walker is how good are the creases in his trousers.
Someone tell this idiot, Obama is irreverent, he isn’t running again.
Crap, wrong place.
I’m actually ok with his non-answers. The media is known for asking trap questions, and Republicans are known for opening their mouths and falling for it hook line and sinker.
You are absolutely correct.
And the MSM isn’t all that cunning about it.
Journ-0-list Stephanopolus telegraphed the “war on women” meme in Jan 2012 during the first R debates when out of nowhere he started firing questions about birth control.
Limbaugh picked up on it right away but a number of R candidates fumbled the ball.

Atlas Shrugged....
Walker’s refusal to play this cat and mouse game will give the media fits and the media will get more and more desperate coming up with stupid questions to get him to take a fall. They’re the ones who are going to end up looking like kids throwing tantrums and Walker will look like the grown up in the room.
You mean irrelevant?
Never been a Green Bay fan, but that map may make me one...
Note the "liberal beeyotch from #311" haircut.
"Well, he was a member of the God Damn America Church for 16 years, and the God Damn America Church claims to be "Christian," so since I'm not familiar with the details of the theology of the God Damn America Church, I guess for now we'll have to take his word for it that The God Damn America Church is part of broader Christianity, though I admit I don't fully understand that view. "
With that homely face and haircut she will never get a man either unless his name happens to be Butch.
I'm sure the Bush team is responsible for much of this silliness.
bttt
I was joking : ) - pulling a “Scott Walker.”
That is priceless!
At this stage, reporters are looking for something they can turn into a negative sound bite, something they can hang around Walker's neck for the next year.
Walker's job is to not give them the sound-bites they want, but instead to put out his viewpoints on his own terms, and in his own good time.
