#100 – Billy Joel: “Uptown Girl”

I was watching MTV on a Friday night in a moderately stoned condition when I heard the opening of this song. I sat up straight, thinking the Four Seasons were back. Then I saw it was Billy Joel. I never thought I would live long enough to hear a current artist do an imitation Four Seasons tune as satire.

This song is far more sophisticated than anything the Crewe-Gaudio or Linzer-Randall teams wrote for the Jersey Boys. It starts in E Major, drops to C Major, then A Major before returning to E. Schubert would have linked the key structure of this song.
