(CNN)The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria has crude, stomach-turning tactics when it comes to dealing with its enemy, but experts say that its moneymaking methods are highly sophisticated, especially for such a new terror group.
Here's a look at how ISIS has made (and taken) millions:
Oil production and smuggling ISIS makes between $1 million and $2 million each day from oil sales, numerous sources tell CNN. The oil comes mostly from refineries and wells that ISIS controls in northern Iraq and northern Syria.
The militants smuggle oil into southern Turkey, for example, and sell it to people who desperately need it just to carry on some semblance of everyday life.
The United States-led coalition fighting ISIS has repeatedly targeted ISIS oil assets in an effort to, in part, damage this arm of the group's financial system.
ISIS is estimated to produce about 44,000 barrels a day in Syria and 4,000 barrels a day in Iraq, according to Foreign Policy. A Kurdish newspaper has published the names of people involved with ISIS and its oil enterprise, the magazine reported.
Some on the list were associated with oil smuggling under former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, Foreign Policy said, as were those associated with a Toyota branch in Irbil that sells ISIS trucks.
Through its oil operations, ISIS appears to be trying to establish a self-sufficient state in the "Sunni triangle" in west and north Iraq, said Luay al-Khatteeb, founder and director of the Iraq Energy Institute.

ISIS makes their money the old-fashioned way.
They steal it.
...and harvest their organs for fun and profit.
And oil prices started dropping right after this began. Coincidence?
I don’t think these Islamic terrorists are going to show up for a 9-5 job.
But their secret bonanza is knocking over Girl Scouts.
Same as both houses of Congress and the USSA Gov.
Just how hard can it be to take over control of the oil refineries from ISIS?
Eliminate the major source of funds and kill them all. A concerted effort should be able to get the job done in 1-2 years.
Other reports from last year said that a lot of their
oil money came from a mafia-like protection racket.

I remember KLA Klinton bombing refineries to smothering in Serbia which resulted in success. Why are we not doing the same on ISIS?
Once Obama gives them all jobs, ISIS will find the remittances very lucrative
I think ISIS would be an ideal recruiting ground for packagers of securities offered by Goldman Sachs.
If our fearless leader had wanted to put IS out of business, he would have already done it.
Title makes me think about how our Wizard of Washington (AKA Obama) "makes" money.
Run the Feds' currency printing presses overtime, give dollars to friends (especially contractors), and (I'm guessing) use tons of dollars to short gold and silver stocks ... sending physical gold and silver prices down to make the dollar look like it's worth something.
I heard that the kidnapping foreigners is drying up, so now the terrorist are going to go across the porous border with Turkey and steal aid workers working in the refugee camps, so they can be ransomed.
Is this a time warp? Are we back to the medieval era?
Can we assume that that's a rhetorical question? You and know that the Religion of Pieces never *left* the medieval era.
