Excerpt:
The latest cold snap has almost all of Lake Erie covered by ice.
The Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory says ice has formed across close to 94 percent of the lake. That's the highest percentage out of all of the Great Lakes.
Just two years ago at this time of the year, only about half of the lake had ice cover.
The Northeast Ohio Media Group in Cleveland reports that the lake reached 100 percent ice coverage only three times since records have been kept.
The most recent time was in 1996.

“Ive always heard that 90% of the fish are in 10% of the lake at any one time, anyway...”
And you have always been fishing in the other 90% of the lake.

Thanks for the clarification. I had heard that parts of the Great Lakes passage stay open as long as the weather allows, but the entire seaway is very much a seasonal thing.

It may hit 100% this month. We have at least two weeks more of seriously subfreezing temperatures here on the Erie shore.

I don't know when that might have been, but whenever, it would have been a very long walk. Can't think of why one would want to try it.

Ever bring coal into Lake Charlevoix? That may have been before your time.........

With the cold in the Midwest Lake Michigan may very well catch up with the other lakes, and thereby set a combined Great Lakes record ice coverage!
To: rightwingcrazy
I hope they mean 94% of the *surface* is frozen. Otherwise, where would all the fish go?
That's the best time for ice fishin'. What we do is go out on the ice and start chipping away until we find a school of fish then chip them out of the ice....ya don't even need bait or a fishin' rod.

Just two years ago at this time of the year, only about half of the lake had ice cover. And last year was the second highest year on record for ice coverage. We're behind last year.

Funny thing is....these environmental disasters like Lake Erie, Boston Harbor, and Love Canal all began under Dem oversight.

We're all frozen as well.
National Weather Service says Lake Champlain frozen 'closed' BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The National Weather Service says Lake Champlain is now officially frozen over.
The Weather Service says the 120-mile long lake between Vermont and New York was reported as "closed" on Monday. It comes as the region is enduring a protracted cold spell.
It is the second year in a row the lake has frozen over. And it is the first time since 2003-2005 that Lake Champlain has frozen in consecutive years. The records go back to 1816.
Last year the lake was reported closed on Feb. 12.
The Weather Service says it's much less common to have the lake freeze in consecutive years than it used to be.
BTW, you can see sat photos taken daily
here. I like to check daily as the lake gets closer to being closed.

And then odumbo called all his immigration advisors into a meeting and announced, “I have a great idea that the Republicans can't object to...Let's create an ice bridge over the Rio Grande and pass out free obamamobiles (Chevy Volts) and then all our future voters won't even have to get wet on Election Day!” The room went wild with excited people explaining how much it would do for the economy, how much it would do for public education, how much it would do for...
