Singer-songwriter Lesley Gore, who topped the charts in 1963 with her epic song of teenage angst, "It's My Party," and followed it up with the hits "Judy's Turn to Cry," ''You Don't Own Me" and the feminist anthem "You Don't Own Me," died Monday. She was 68.

Gore died of cancer at New York University Langone Medical Center in Manhattan, according to her partner of 33 years, Lois Sasson.

Liked the song "California Nights" but that was about it.

Here's a video of her not too long ago performing in New Jersey in front of a handful of people. And I do mean a handful. But she looked youngish and feminine there, not so much the old butch in man's clothing seen earlier in this thread. She must have aged fast these past 10 years.

Check out the old guy in a pink shirt near the beginning in front of the stage. Wasn't he a bit character in The Sopranos?

Her song “California Nights” was the most overtly sexual song on the radio, at least until Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love” and Donna Summer’s “Love to Love You Baby.”

Are you kidding? What am I missing?

Along the sand, let's walk the shore together now
Yes hand in hand, it's gonna be fair weather now
When the stars come out, stop to count them in the sky

Love California nights
When I'm walkin' with you hand in hand by the shore
Yes, I love California nights
At the beach where we'd swim with the tide rolling in

And there will be beneath the midnight sky above
Just you and me and we will whisper words of love
While the fire light softly flickers in the sand

Warm California nights
With the breeze blowin' in, the time for love to begin
I would miss California nights if I went on my way
Thinkin' now that I'll stay

Ooh, baby
Love you, baby
Mm, baby

Love California nights
Always close as a kiss, nothing's sweeter than this
And we'll spend California nights
Always close as a kiss

I thought he’d like being able to declare “It’s MY party and I’ll cry if I want to!”

Gayla Pevee was only 10 when her “I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas” was a smash hit in 1953!

”It’s My Party”

”She’s a Fool”

”Judy’s Turn to Cry”
Catch the harpsichord in the arrangement.

”You Don’t Own Me”

”Maybe I Know”
Quincy Jones gave her a Burlesque runway arrangement.

”The Look of Love”
Both the single and album versions electronically merged into one with scenes from “Two For the Road”.

Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows”
From a forgettable movie of the era.

”California Nights”
By this time she had teamed up with Bob Crewe as producer. He had produced the Four Seasons and others, and was one of the key figures of pop music in the era. He died just a short time ago. Great use of harpsichord.

”It’s a Happening World”
The volume is too low of this video, but this is a Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil collaboration. It’s a plea for being convention during 1967, the year of hippies and the Summer of Love. It’s one of my favorites.

I’m 66 years old and will be 67 n April. It’s my party came out when I was about 14 years old. If she was 68, then she would have made It’s My Party when she was either 15 or 16. I thought she may have been a couple of years older as well.

I have yet to run across a hit about a boy-boy relationship

Isn't that song by Sam Smith, pretty much about that?

“Do you remember Shelly Fabre’s hit “Johnny Angel”?”

Remember it, I still play it on occasion.

At the time it came out I was madly in love for years with a guy I met in 4th grade, never talked to again and loved him from afar till we graduated 12th grade.

I still think fondly of him. He grew up to be a good guy, runs a business, makes good money, works hard, has a wife who is not as pretty as he was handsome (which to me shows how good a guy he was) and ha! still lives in my hometown. Sigh. What a guy.

Btw, never never would ordinarily think this but Karen Carpenter did real justice to that song.
