This is inaccurate.
They just take the number of recipients and multiply that by the national “average” benefit per person.
The real numbers should be available somewhere.

“Yeah, and a LOT that I see using the cards are young, able-bodied people. That really steams me. “

Before you get too steamed you should check the number of people working jobs who still fall below the poverty line and qualify for food stamps.

“I wonder to what degree the growth of SNAP / food stamps has driven food price inflation by removing price sensitivity for those who would otherwise be most sensitive.”

That is it’s purpose: to support food prices. For the profits of the Chamber of Commerce.

That’s why abuse is rampant: as long as the money is spent the politicians’ donors are happy.

DC must have replaced California. I don’t see it on the list.

“It was worse in Espanola before the casinos came along.”

Yeah, you are probably right. But it is still a dangerous place to live. Been trying to get my mother to move to Rio Rancho or Los Alamos for years...

Poverty line is a subjective measurement. Our "poor" are the richest in the world- fact.

Strong correlation, with percent blacks. (Strong, not complete)

No surprise there.

“Total cost of just these benefits alone (That is, how much do just the money on those EBT cards cost the state?): Around $53.12 million Cost of benefits alone per capita in this state: $25.47 per person”

Yeah, that math does work out for $25.47 per capita, but I’d like to know the figure of how many of that “per capita” actually pays taxes. To be more accurate, the figures need to remove children as well as non-tax paying adults. Bet that $25.47 figure skyrockets when the numbers are only reflective of taxpayers. There must be public numbers out there showing how many New Mexicans paid income taxes, eliminating the EIC recipients and such.

Being out of money after you pay your other bills isn’t subjective.
In case you haven’t noticed everything except wages have gone up.

So more people are working full time and still not having enough money to eat and sleep inside.

Those states with the lowest welfare rates are simply lack the infrastructure to support extensive welfare handouts. EBT et al just can’t provide enough to overcome the fact that if you don’t fend for yourself you’ll starve, as just getting to a grocery store requires enough effort that if you can afford to get there you can [most likely] afford to buy what you fundamentally need.

This in contrast with dense urban areas, or warm southern climates, where there are sufficient options within walking distance where one can take advantage of EBT services.

This socio-geographic reality is what leads to the population being made up of energy workers, cowboys/girls, Mormons and conservatives.

This is misleading . Cali might have fewer people in percent of total population on food stamps, but it spends the most money on them.

Strong correlation, with percent blacks.

Oregon is 2% black, far below average. It has mostly whites with a better than average education. Could the problem be drug abuse? Oregon was at the front of the pot parade.

Interesting, thanks.
I’m sure that “improvement” will be implemented in the near future.

Probably because working in a coal mine or trying to grow crops on a rocky, 45 degree angle doesn’t bring in much money. And unfortunately, the democrats controlled the state for the past 100 years. I think the state bird was Robert Byrd, (KKK-WV). He got the Mountaineers used to the government dole.

Now that they’re voting Republican once again, perhaps that will change... However, with Obama’s War on Coal I wouldn’t be surprised to see more—not less—poverty.
