I spent 15 months there and goombahs would probe the perimeter wire now and then... always winding up dead. One Marine I worked with- operated diesel generators by day, and pulled guard duty... in this instance the previous night, as his turn had come up. My job was to put containers around the generators to catch any run away fuel, as the systems were pressurized and a leak had the potential to drain the fuel reservoir if undetected.

I arrived at the job site one morning, and a few of the Marines were ribbing one of their buddies. Seems he had detected 3 sappers trying to come onto the base from the north, the night before, and the guard spotted them from the tower he was in, killing all three. He was pretty stoked about it, but was reminded by his superiors to keep it on the down low (no end zone celebrating) but since I was a fresh face that morning, the Marine's buddies made sure I knew and were more than happy and willing to spread the good news. The young Marine was all smiles... word about base attacks spread like wildfire, so I already knew about the attempted breech. It was a moment I enjoyed that morning, by being allowed to share in the Marine fraternity. We did some fist bumping, hand shaking and oorah-ing, out of sight of the Marine's superiors... and damn it felt good.

Said 8 attackers, might have been smoked on approach to the base, inside the serpentine arranged concrete road barriers leading up to the gate, just inside the gate, or further on the base. There would have been automatic weapons including anti armor weapons manned in a watch tower, and on the ground. It'll be interesting to see where the firefight (if that's what it was) took place.

It's good to see that ISF took the attackers out.
