General Motors Co (GM.N) said Thursday it will build the Chevrolet Bolt electric car at an assembly plant near Detroit, where it will invest $200 million for the project.
The compact Bolt, shown as a concept vehicle at the Detroit auto show last month, is designed to have a range of 200 miles, and will cost about $30,000 apiece after tax breaks.
GM's announcement confirms a report last week by Reuters that the Bolt would be produced at the under-used Orion assembly plant in Michigan.
The only electric car currently available with a 200-mile range is the Tesla Model S, which starts at $71,070 before tax credits for electric vehicles (EVs).

Reuters cleverly tries to hide the fact that roughly half the cost of a $70,000 electrical vehicle is being borne by the taxpayers.
Too bad that they don’t come with trolley poles so that you can use San Francisco’s rather extensive trolley bus wire network . . .
With the Huge demand for electric cars ,these will Fly Off the Lot , LOL
You have to ‘fill’ these cars by recharging them.....a good many Power Plants are fueled by c-o-a-l....where ever the electricity comes from it is very expensive....
They should rename it the PRICK.
So exactly where does the other end of that charging cord lead to again? /s/
They want their mark on EVERYTHING.
When is MO going to authorize an "O" tampon?
You'll have several hours to contemplate that during rechage.
I was hoping GM would drop its government-mandated Volt program after the government sold its shares. But it looks like the money-losing company is still deep in OZero’s pocket. So, they are creating ANOTHER ObamaMobile!
And even at $30K it is still not affordable for most Americans. Worst of all it is GM who build a crappy product and when the business started to go bad for them, they got a sweet bail out from the same taxpayers whom they screwed over the years.
BTW, I am not bitter from being screwed by GM a few years back. No, not at all. /sarc
Hmm, a .50 cal, bolt action car. Impressive idea.
70K or even 30K is too expensive for anything with only 200 miles of range — making all of these things “around town only” cars.
They could name it the Peoples Car but that’s was already trademarked by Hitler.
Generally the per mile equivalent costs are much cheaper for electricity - about 1/3rd when gas is at $3.50/gallon and burning coal is one of the cheaper ways to produce electricity.
They want their mark on EVERYTHING.
So do dogs.
Yeah, according to the guys on Top Gear BBC more like 13 hours for the Nissan leaf.
