MBTA General Manager Beverly Scott jetted off at taxpayer expense nearly every month during her two-plus-year tenure sometimes several times a month to conferences and meetings around the country, even as the troubled transit system was collapsing around her, a Herald review shows.
A review of Scotts monthly expense reports provided by the MBTA as part of public records request shows she spent 106 days traveling out of state while at the helm of the T, taking 30 trips in 24 months.
During that time, Scott, who announced yesterday shes stepping down in April, racked up $56,753 in expenses on lodging, airplane tickets and dining tabs, including at least $1,132 on hotel laundry and dry-cleaning bills.
Scott often charged taxpayers for excess baggage fees, accruing $411 on three flights between Boston and Chicago and to Washington, D.C., in 2013 and $520 on an October flight to an American Public Transportation Association (APTA) conference in Houston.
She traveled out of state nearly every month of 2014 sometimes multiple times a month, records show. In September, for example, she spent nearly two weeks outside the state attending conferences in Washington, Detroit and Minneapolis. The next month, she headed to Houston and Washington.
The GM has traveled to, among other cities, San Diego, Montreal, New York, Denver, Portland, Oregon, and to Washington a total of eight times, including flying first class in January 2013 to a Rail-Volution conference.
While Scott was flying off to other cities, the MBTA was facing mechanical failures, chronically late trains, dirty cars and stations, driver safety issues and massive debt. The agency also cut services while hiking fares, and saw out-of-control spending and a 40 percent hike in employees scoring six-figure salaries.

Must be fundraising time on FR again. Political correctness has kicked in and factual posts are getting pulled. We dare not offend at fundraising time!
Explain exactly what the hell was wrong with #12.
You’ll get no argument from me.
Although, I think Obama is a special case—he is a gifted con-man and a political psychopath. As he said to Harry Reid after an early speech, “I have a gift.”
That’s not to say he’s competent as a lawyer.
I have worked for government agencies many times over my 25 years as a contractor.
They think nothing of living lavishly on taxpayer expense, and wasting money to benefit their friends companies
I am sure this will make Bostonians wake up and realize that Democrats are destroying their wonderful city......do I need the sarcasm tag?
This thread has bad mojo.
Gross mismanagement?
They don’t even have a database of required maintenance on rail cars. Someone wouldn’t do that unless they purposely intended to conceal problems.
I’ve watched the first five minutes... she is clearly Peter Principled beyond her capability. A typical AA appointee using words and phrases she somewhat understands, mixing in emotional appeals and self-aggrandizement of her efforts. Maybe I’ll sit through some more—but it is 26 minutes of mush, so I don’t think I’ll make it too far.
yikes
Nothing substantive at all. The reporter even asked her again; “What is being done now to address the problem?.” She either didn’t know or has no solution because she didn’t answer the question again. Completely useless.
Trying not to imagine what one could do in eight...
Another triumph of affirmative action. Or should that be affirmative inaction?
“Love serving our population.” “Dedicated.” “Not my first rodeo... I’ve been through floods, 9-11, snowstorms...” etc, etc.
Typical bureaucrat figurehead who knows nothing about the department she is in charge of.
Somehow all PRIVATE businesses in Mass. managed to get their lots cleared and kept business running despite the snow.
What could possibly be the difference that caused the UNIONIZED MBTA to stop all operations?
She’s supposed to have a sit with Governor Baker today, we’ll see.
Howie wrote the book “The Brothers Bulger”. A good read if you haven't.
Our government abuses here in NH are pretty minor. About ten years back out town clerk embezzled about $17K. It was a big deal in my parts. She lost her job and did some time.
Now, ye citizens of Boston
Don’t you think it’s a scandal
How the people have to pay and pay?
Fight the fare increase, vote for George O’Brian
Get poor Charlie off the MTA

If the tracks were covered in Pork Chops. The trains would “Fly Like an Eagle” as she said.
Sounds like her chickens have finally... come home...TO ROOST!
Yes now the disabled can wait with everyone else for the trains that don’t work.
