Marines Surrender Weapons Before Yemen Evacuation

U.S. Embassy Marines in Yemen handed over their M-9 pistols and M-4 carbines before evacuating the chaotic country with diplomatic personnel, the Pentagon said Wednesday.

The Marines also left behind several vehicles at the airport in the capital city of Sanaa before departing on a civilian flight, said Army Col. Steve Warren, a Pentagon spokesman.

Warren said the Marines destroyed their machine guns and other crew-served weapons before leaving the Embassy for the airport. He also said that it was unclear who now had custody of the weapons and vehicles that were surrendered.

A Marine spokesman could not immediately say whether the surrender of weapons by Embassy Marines in an evacuation was unprecedented.

In this and another thread, some people here say that the Marines had to surrender their weapons because they were going to take a commercial flight out.
Why wouldn’t they take a military transport? They WERE at an airport, after all.

I saw loads of weapons on US commercial carriers coming in and out of Kuwait. The weps rode in the belly.

In the Army the number priority is SHARP (sexual harassment and assault reporting) You will hear it at every major briefings from all the officers up to and including generals.

Any type of military action is secondary these days.

Just ask any soldier and they will confirm.

In my limited experience as a draftee, we were trained to demolish items that we had to abandon if and when we retreated. I do not understand the order to Marines to leave useable material.
