Built and designed in the 1960s after the A-12 Oxcart, the SR-71 Blackbird is still the fastest, most vanguardist air-breathing airplane in the history of aviation. These once classified photos reveal how Lockheed built both birds in secret, in California. They look taken at the Rebel base in Hoth.
"Everything had to be invented"
The A-12 and the SR-71 were a completely different design from anything else before itand everything after, as time has demonstrated. At the time, many of the technologies needed to make these airplanes were considered "impossible." And yet, thanks to Kelly Johnson and the amazing team at engineers and scientists at Lockheed's Skunk Works, they were invented from scratchin twenty months.

I halfway expected to see Brian Williams in the cockpit.
Don’t you think the nation exists but that there has to be someone who is willing to gather the people with the right stuff and git-r-done?
Great stories!
Great story!
Glad you enjoyed !
The coolest plane of WWII, the P-38 in my opinion, was also a Kelly Johnson brain child.
The guy was a genius.
Thanks for both your reply, and your service !

My cousin was one of the main superintendents on the SAC museum by Ashland, Nebraska. They moved one from Bellevue to the new location, a distance of 30 miles. Took them several hours. The TV did a story about it taking longer to move the 30 miles due to taking wires down etc. then it did to fly cross country.
In wayyy much more time than this, and I'd wager prolly more money as well, our current administration failed at a website.
**sigh**
Now our military is the most under staffed and all kinds of dykes and poofters are involved.
How sad, the sheep of this country have no idea what evil they’ve unleashed on this country by electing this POS twice.
Thanks for the ping. Very good!
The photo from the article would look great with Brian Williams, the real pilot’s photo instead of that obvious imposter.
The P-38 was a cool plane.
When I was a kid, I had cheap models of every common WWII fighter and bomber. To me the Spitfire and ME-109 were probably the most beautiful ever.
Actually liked the P-40 too.
Designed 55 years ago, and it still looks futuristic.
WOW, I need to take a cold shower now... The SR-71 was a beautiful “Cold War Warrior”.
