Couldn’t the bakery have asked $1000 for a cake, and/or told the sinful couple they’re going to donate the fee to an anti-homosexual group?<<<<<<<<<<<

They could have, but the couple would still say they were discriminated against because the fee was higher, and I think the objective is lawsuit proceeds. I don’t think there is a way for the bakeries to remain independent in their choice of refusal of service. Unless the law can be changed, and good luck with that!
