My mother was stupid enough to marry a man (myfather) who chewed gum like a barnyard animal, and he would deliberately chew as obnoxiously as he could BECAUSE he knew it bothered my mother (and later me).

One of my sisters followed his lead.

Both of them tormented me with the habit while I was growing up.

I grew to DESPISE the habit of gum chewing, and also the people who indulged in it.

To this day I cannot stomach the sound, the look, or the stench of gum chewing.

I refuse to take public transportation of any kind unless I absolutely have to, because, sure as shiite, the obnoxious gum chewers manage to sit next to me.

Many gum chewers, if I make myself vulnerable and admit that the habit bothers me, then gleefully redouble their efforts to be obnoxious.

I avoid gum chewers wherever possible. I hate the habit, and I usually end up hating the people who indulge in it.

I have noticed that at least some black people chew gum extra loudly. I take special pains to avoid them. They often refuse to tone down their noise.
