This writer is too quick to dismiss Turkish aspirations - they are very powerful, and have gained influence with bold moves in Syria, while being ready to make a campaign for the Crimea.

I agree that there are those in Iran who want a new Persian Empire. They and Turkey might wish to carve up Iraq between them.

The problem with Turkey is that president believes he must be a Caliph in their cozy new Caliphate ISIS now fights for. Another problem is there are too many Turks, including nice educated dudes who are loathing to the idea of being a metropoly again, not to mention village idiots who loves the Anti-Western, Islamic aspect of it.
