By the time I made it to a selective college, I found myself entirely surrounded by this upper-middle-class tribe. My fellow students and my professors were overwhelmingly drawn from comfortably affluent families hailing from an almost laughably small number of comfortably affluent neighborhoods, mostly in and around big coastal cities. Though virtually all of these polite, well-groomed people were politically liberal, I sensed that their gut political instincts were all about protecting what they had and scratching out the eyeballs of anyone who dared to suggest taking it away from them.

Upper Middle Class = Whitey...
Where I used to live (San Mateo California) there is no land to build on to speak of so they will tear down buildings and put taller buildings which house retail and residential housing. I lived about 1 mile from the rail road track in a older 1950’s neighborhood and it is literally over run now and the City was instrumental in it happening.
The home on one of the streets in my old neighborhood all one story ranch homes have 5 story buildings behind the houses it is ridiculous. People would tell the City to knock it off but they did not care. Most of the City council lives in Hillsbourough or San Mateo Park which does not have the high density and are very exclusive hoods..
I now live in Texas.
Wouldn’t you already have been taxed on the money you are putting in those accounts? Or was it like a 401K and they took it from your paycheck?
Elites’ tactic in cases like this:
1) yoke the sheeple with crippling taxes
2) when you want them to go down a certain path, give them tax breaks if they take that path; in this case, the elites want the sheeple to pay the elites’ university system to indoctrinate the sheeple’s kids
3) it doesn’t hurt that the elites and their minions would be paying for their kids to go to the university indoctrination system anyway, since they want them to grow up to be good nwo minions.
4) so it’s a tax break the elites share with the sheeple, for tactical reasons, but there are, of course, many other tax strategies that the sheeple are ignorant of or unable to make use of, which work well for the elites. Thus, the elites and their higher-level minions say, “taxes are for the little people”.
It’s like a Roth IRA, in that you put in after-tax money and it grows tax free. But for the gains to be non-taxable the distributions have to be spent on college. Actually you can even spend them on college for yourself. But anything else you pay tax, and I believe penalties as well.
You’re way too wedded to your silly NWO conspiracy theories.
I think that anyone associated with the created “wealth” of this fictitious Stock Market is fair game to be criticized. Those profiting know it is a joke and criminal. Ronald Reagan’s own David Stockman recently said so, and predicted its collapse.
David Stockman: Europe's QE Debt Spree Has Robin Hood Spinning in His Grave
We all know this is coming, only fools and diehards claim otherwise.
....”We all know this is coming, only fools and diehards claim otherwise”....
Might very well be anticipated and purposeful for those who stand to gain the most, and by whatever/whoever they have ready to take it’s place.
It was a terrible article. Neither the author, nor you have any concept of the science of economics.
What you call "selfish behavior" is yet another example of Adam Smith's "invisible hand" which guides capitalist societies to the maximum possible production of goods and services.
In 1776 there were two events which would shape the world for centuries to come. One, as every American knows, was the Declaration of Independence, the second, which was at least as important was the publication of a book called Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith.
Smith showed how if each individual is left to maximize his own wealth this will act as an "invisible hand" guiding our entire society in turn to maximize its wealth.
Attempts to squash each individual's ability to maximize his own interests, frequently by shaming these actions as "selfish", always lead to disaster in the long run.
True conservatives know these truths, and understand the consequences of suppressing self-seeking. Look at the fate of the communist block nations to see what happens.
Being from Bangladesh he has a good understanding of what “classes” are about and can spot them quick, even if denied by most here.
I’ve been fortunate to cross over various classes..... it is an education in itself how the classes see, and work, and yes, vote among themselves and the differences throughout. You also learn which classes are accepting as an individuals and which ones use people until they’re finished with them. The higher you go the more you will see the later.
Yeah, but he makes a fair point about supper middle class types using force of law to protect their interests. I doubt Adam Smith would approve of dentists using licensing to protect themselves from teeth whitening entrepreneurs.
I suspect you are right about the dentists, but I think Adam would have strongly supported the whole NIMBY attitude. If we have to lower the value of land, it costs us less to lower the value of cheap land instead of expensive land.
Agreed on that point.
I have family like this. They and their children are big time democrats yet they move to the suburbs to flee the lousy Portland public schools, bitch when medium density affordable housing (apartments) are build in their neighborhood and complain that everyone should learn English.
erp...fully read the article. not quite the same thing.
I heard it somewhere already.
First they ‘ve come for the Czars, then for bourgeois, then for kulaks and so on down to a dude who was ‘rich’ enough to own two pairs of shoes instead of just one.
The fatal error of this pundit (and Obamas attack on saving for college - his retreat from the 529 college plan tax - the vehicle Reihan Salam employs to run with this rant):
Americans want to join the Upper Middle Class, not rot in the lower classes.
The folks he referenced are the academics and professionals, not the business managers and entrepreneurs, the credentialed people who believe their government licenses and educational degrees give them rights above and beyond their actual attainments and abilities.
This guy claims he is a conservative.
My a@@!.
