The USGS says there is a lot of oil in the North Cuban Basin but that is off limits to US oil companies and refiners. So what we see is oil companies from nations such as Brazil, Malaysia, Viet Nam, China, Spain, and others making attempts to develop that.
Similarly, US ag producers are keenly interested in exporting to Cuba. There are work-arounds that allow some exports but they want it opened up.
The only reason the embargo is still in place is the political advantage to the GOP, and that advantage is shrinking or tipping. And many democrats, especially Obama, think that advantage will soon be a liability, which is why he is pursuing this.
I know one thing for sure. Florida is the pivot point in presidential elections and if the GOP candidate can't win Florida, he can't win the presidency.
Really? Any worthwhile economically viable project could have been initiated through Canada anytime during the embargo. The fact is that the lack of respect for property rights, corruption, inherent poverty and byzantine administration have made Cuba unfit for major investment or commerce. Virtually nothing has changed. Obama simply made it easier for the Castro thugs to get more credit by gullible banks.
You liberals are always about the Mammon, huh.
the only reason for the ambargo is to prevent arming and enriching terrorists who have their boots on people’s necks in Cuba.
The GOP has nothing to do with it, heck they probably are closet communists themselves who only milk this cow,
There is no little Bush worshiper protesting for. bush i. the streets, repeat after me, but there is plenty of little Obamas willing to murder for Obama and Castro indeed, and that is the saliency of the “political advantage” game you talk about: ie there is none for the GOP.
The final point is we are not developing Canada, because we fuck the Keystone pipeline and ANWAR. But we are all too happy to plot “political short term advantage” for Cuba relations, illegals relations etc..
