I would have expected it takes more than a kilowatthour of energy to remove a kilowatt hour of heat.

Definitely not so. You can play around with EER ratings and convert the BTUs to KWs to see that.

That’s the whole point of a good mechanical refrigeration system - you manage to move more heat than the energy input, a lot more.
