To understand recent responses to police violence against people of color, one must take a global and historical view, says Angela Davis.
The UC Santa Cruz emeritus professor spoke to hundreds at the Martin Luther King Jr. Convocation on Wednesday at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium, which was filled to capacity.
Titled “Racism, Militarism, Poverty: From Ferguson to Palestine,” Davis’s talk drew connections between King’s work and uprisings today, in response to recent police killings of unarmed black men in Missouri and New York.

Angela Davis is a card carrying, proud to be Communist and an adamant anti-American and has been for many, many years. I am surprised and disappointed that there were 1000 people who wanted to hear her speech.

I was saddened to read the letter from my friends addressed to you about Dr. Angela Davis’ selection as MLK Jr. convocation speaker.
I applaud the choice of Dr. Davis as speaker, as well as endorse the subject she’s chosen to address. I would think that if Dr. King were here he would voice similar concerns. As a rabbi, I must state categorically that anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism are two completely different things, although the State of Israel and its propagandists do all they can to confuse the two. Those who demand justice for the Palestinians are following the only path that will ensure a future for Jews. As long as Palestinians are denied their rights, Jews will never be safe. Just as there is no true equality in this country as long as black people suffer oppression and state-sanctioned violence.
