A few slave holders were undeniably cruel. Examples of slaves beaten to death were not common, neither were they unknown. The majority of slave holders treated their slaves well.”

The rest of the article is just so much pablum and an invention of some sort...

Treating a slave badly was akin to owning a Rolls Royce and using it to pull stumps and haul manure.

The murder of a slave was always a crime in the US. Prison sentences of 5 or 10 years were quite common, and executions were not unknown.
