I worked in an environment that rife with profanity. It was part of the culture of the corporation. It did not bother me at the time because I was young and inexperienced.

Fifteen years of this, and I had enough. I left the company for another. This one was run by gentlemen and ladies. In the seven years I was there, I think I heard the CEO use profanity once...and it was in defense of his staff against that of another company.

The second company was much nicer to work at. The people respected each other and what they had to say.

In the end its leadership.

Also, I worked in the call center business. I had to assume every phone around me was live. If I heard it on the floor, that person was not on the floor very long.

I worked for a large granite/stone fabricator in Toronto for awhile. The language was disgusting, even from the two owners. I was hired to make some changes in the business, to organize and raise the standards a bit. The first thing I did was set up my swear jar, with the list of fees for various profanities. The fines were not cheap, with using the Lord’s name as a curse being the most expensive at $10.00.

My bosses used to joke that they didn’t have to pay me as I made more than everyone else just by emptying the swear jar.
