Borg was one of those "scholars" who could not admit to himself (like Bultmann etc.) that there simply is not enough hard historical data to disprove the Gospel narratives.

So he spent his life inventing and elaborating a complicated counternarrative which had no unifying methodology.

He was a failed physicist and a failed philosopher who tried to retroject watered-down Rawlsian analysis into the Gospel.

His approach was already discredited by the time he was first published, hence his move into pop philosophy/theology.
