I wonder if that is becoming more apparent to the Western Allied leaders, in the wake of the pessimism engendered by the events of December.
I guess it doesn't matter that much, as long as they kept pounding away, which they most certainly were doing.
If I were an Allied planner, I would have little reason to expect anything but more slogging and hacking through German defenses. The only reason to feel optimism is that the Germans must have shifted forces east to face the Soviets.
The coming collapse of German resistance will be a welcome surprise.
