Box Office: 'American Sniper' Nabs Huge $18.3M Friday
Forbes ^

Posted on 01/24/2015 1:02:29 PM PST by Red in Blue PA

The top film of last Friday (and quite obviously the weekend) was again Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper. The Warner Bros./Time Warner Inc. release earned another $18.325 million yesterday, which was a Friday-to-Friday drop of just 40%. It has now earned $154m domestic, including $14.5m in IMAX alone. That’s also the biggest non-debut-weekend Friday in history for an R-rated film, easily besting the $13m second Friday of The Passion of the Christ as well the over/under $10m second Fridays of The Matrix Reloaded, The Hangover part II, and 300. Among R-rated films that didn’t open on a Friday per-se, it comes its second Friday comes in just under the opening Fridays of The Passion of the Christ ($22.9m), The Hangover part II ($29.2m), and The Matrix Reloaded ($31.3m). If there was any question, it is now clear that, inflation and IMAX/PLF bumps notwithstanding, American Sniper is indeed playing like the (all due respect) second coming of The Passion of the Christ.

"ASDS (American Sniper Derangement Syndrome) is taking its toll on the looney left. The great sucess of this film has them on suicide watch."

Indeed.

They don't want to admit it, but when they toss and turn in the middle of the night in their $$$ brownstones in Tribeca and Georgetown they realize that the great interior of America (that they espy from 35,000 ft. in their G-7s) is filled with people that appreciate Chris Kyle.

They also know a lot of those rubes can shoot passably well.

I am a middle aged white man.

Mine was the first generation bussed for race.
Mine was the first generation to be force fed this crap throughout my schooling.
Mine was the first generation that had to compete in an era of affirmative action.
Mine was the first generation to deal with PC attitudes in the workplace so as not to offend anyone.

I don’t need to spend $11.50 to go watch a movie that tells me once again that the US had a civil rights movement. It has been in my life for 50 years.

No, thanks.

We had the Color Purple.
We had D’Jango.
We had the Butler.
We had Precious.
We had all of those “Black High School does good” movies.

I am really tired of them.

I like to watch movies that are good stories, good drama or comedy, or pure fantasy. If I want to watch a docudrama, I will watch Alien Invasion crap on the History Channel 2.

My wife and I walked out of the movie last week. Of course, it was silent. No one was speaking.

We got outside into the parking lot. My wife asked me what I thought.

My first thought was, “The 200,300,400 yard range is going to be busy for the rest of the spring because everyone is going to think they are snipers.”

Whenever Rocky was in the college movie theater 30 years ago, the weight room was full with skinny little Italian kids for the next two weeks. Its the same thing.

Great movie though.

I watched Million dollar Baby last night without a clue about the movie besides the boxing theme.
What a great movie, Mr. Eastwood is a Master of his craft.
84 years old and still going strong....

I take it you won’t be glued to the tube when the remake of “Roots” hits the airwaves on the (Revisionist) History Channel

Oh my God. Tell me it ain’t so.

But February and BHM is right around the corner isn’t it. I will have to go buy myself a new small whip with which to flagellate myself daily. Leap years suck.

I saw Million Dollar Baby a few years ago and had avoided it because of the right-to-die controversy. Well, that issue aside, it was a great movie. Yes, Clint, somehow, is one of the greatest directors ever. I especially liked the scene when the daughter told her mom she bought her a house and the mom’s reply. Classic.

“The wife and I saw it on Friday. Excellent movie. NO one moved until the very end.”

Ditto that - Also as previously reported all silence on the way out.

BTW - is it true that Kyle lied about being assaulted by that ex wrestler/Governor?

How does an 84 year old man (Eastwood) direct a movie, let alone a GREAT movie? I can barely get up in the morning and I’m not even close to 84.

“It's destined to become an American “Classic.”

Has anyone seen any mention in the media of the fact that another immensely popular war movie that championed patriotism and decisive action, Patton, was released during a time when the American people were sick and tired of our government's mismanagement of a war?

Saw this today as well. Rude, crude, heart wrenching, honest, honor, courage. Many things the left hates. Well done movie, loved it.

I went to see American Sniper this last Wednesday afternoon. Right behind me in the ticket window line was huge crowd of noisy, boisterous teenagers from a local school who had just gotten off a bus to buy tickets for a movie. Thinking I did not want to see American Sniper with an audience full of loud, obnoxious, disrespectful teenagers, I asked one of them what movie they were coming to see. The girl said they were being given extra credit in place of writing a paper for coming to see the movie Selma.

Whew!, I thought. But then I realized that even with all these kids being forced to see the movie, it is still in 7th place at the box office and probably running out of revenue steam this weekend. That says all the more about the success American Sniper is having.

But what was I thinking? Some liberal teacher wouldn't send these kids to see American Sniper for extra credit. I'd lost my head there for a moment... :-)
