The main problem is that few seem to understand what “pro-life” or “conservative” even mean any more, at the core. They have no foundation of understanding, so they’re building on shifting sand.

They certainly don't.

They believe being pro-life is about restricting abortion through a series of "and then you can kill the baby" laws that will never even be enforced, much less save lives.

They also believe that the National Right to Life Committee is actually pro-life at the top management level, when it is actually just another bloated non-profit. The NRLC has no more interest in ending abortion than the NAACP does in ending racism, abortion is its raison d'etre (they've never focused much at all on euthanasia) and the source of nearly all of their money. A century and a half ago abolitionists were longing the day that they achieved victory through emancipation and citizenship, today leaders of the NRLC are busy making sure that next years pro-life rally is bigger than this years.

They have no foundation of understanding, so they’re building on shifting sand.

They would have been very comfortable in the Whig Party of the early 19th century, they would be very proud of themselves for limiting the geographical area that allowed slavery but did NOTHING to actually free a single slave.
