I think a lot of countries are like the United States, many good people with too many bad leaders.

Up until recently I lived on the Canadian Border and there would be joint remembrance ceremonies for 9/11. The Canadians always make us look bad, RCMP, local constabulary and firemen all marching to the border in dress uniform that put us to shame.
A little pomp and ceremony is good for the spirit. It displays fortitude and sense of mission that most of the population don't get.
