He (Pope Francis) comes from South America where a great deal of the rainforest is being destroyed by gold mining. Prior to that, it was land development for resorts and corporations. This is an issue he has grown up with, as we grew up with air pollution from factories, and exhaust emissions from cars (that’s what the catalytic converter was for). It was a big issue in my day, and while I’m no environmentalist, the air in my neck of the woods has become clearer and easier to breathe over the years. In addition, isn’t it a good idea to regulate medical waste to avoid the spread of disease, not to mention the appearance of used hypodermic needles on beaches. I don’t favor extremism, but one has to admit that we have abused the gift of the earth given to us by God.
