Odd Byproduct of Legal Marijuana: Homes That Blow Up
NY Times ^ | January 17, 2015 | Jack Healy

Posted on 01/17/2015 3:22:44 PM PST by Zakeet

When Colorado legalized marijuana two years ago, nobody was quite ready for the problem of exploding houses.

But that is exactly what firefighters, courts and lawmakers across the state are confronting these days: amateur marijuana alchemists who are turning their kitchens and basements into “Breaking Bad”-style laboratories, using flammable chemicals to extract potent drops of a marijuana concentrate commonly called hash oil, and sometimes accidentally blowing up their homes and lighting themselves on fire in the process.

Now will come the calls to legalize hash oil.

Yep. Setting up the next step down the slippery slope.

THC oil is legal or is proposed to be in at least 10 states.

OK, long time ago, and I mean long time, we played hash oil.
Way we did it, a lower pot on a low burn had the finely ground pot in ethanol (we made do with Everclear, close enough). From there, a reflex condenser so we didn’t just boil off the ethanol, top pot collects and drains back.

Continue, SUPERVISED for about 12 hrs. Pour the extract into a glass baking dish, allow that to evaporate to a solid film. Scrape it off with a razor blade, voila Hash oil! Never had to worry about weighing or packaging, this was totally for use of us and friends.

I can also give better tips than most on growing pot, yeah I did all that in the 70s. Got a job driving trucks, got to pee in a bottle every time I turn around, gave it up a long time ago.

And no, it was not addictively hard to quit. If cigarettes were as easy to lay down, I’d be an ex-smoker.

Don’t sweat it Lurker, statute of limitations ran out a long time ago.

I really don’t follow the “butane”. Chemically useless as far as I know. Also the truck driving I mentioned? I was delivering PROPANE for 25 years, my family was in the business before I was born.

The bottles you see outside the convenience stores, they are all propane, one carbon bond up from butane. They are also underfilled and overpriced. Those cylinders are designed to hold 20# (about 4.5 gal). Look at the plastic; Blue Rhino or whoever is selling you 15# for an outrageous amount.

Only connection I can imagine butane/propane is the heating fuel. We just cooked ours stovetop.

...in ethanol (we made do with Everclear, close enough).

It should be close enough, Everclear is ethanol. AKA 'grain alcohol.'

“I view this as the equivalent of frying turkey for Thanksgiving. Someone spills the oil, and there’s an explosion. It’s unfortunate, but it’s not a felony crime.”'

Wait a minute, dood! You mean you can use a turkey frier to make hash oil?

Which part of "equivalent" did you not understand?
