Years ago, my mother (born a British citizen before becoming a naturalized American) were visiting family in England and touring London. We got off the bus and walked, our destination being one of London’s great cathedrals. Big mistake. the street was line with middle eastern men lounging on the sidewalks, smoking cigarettes, not a woman in sight. They glared at us as we passed, most unsettling, and we walked with great haste to the safety of our destination.
