We discussed the Nazi Final Solution and I told him I didn’t believe the world would ever let anything like the Holocaust happen again. He said ‘we will see’. Until we get another FDR. Yep, FDR. He was a mess on the domestic front, but he knew how to rally the country against Hitler and Tojo. And he beat - crushed actually - both Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan in 3 1/2 years. Contrast that with Bush's failure to win Afghanistan.
And yes, I know FDR was weak in his dealings with Stalin. But as a wartime leader, the FDR of 1940 - 1944 was a giant.
