W&M is a ‘public Ivy” because it’s nearly as old as Harvard, but is now a state school (and an exceptionally darn good one, at half the cost!)

There was a book published in the 1980s called The Public Ivies which identified a number of excellent schools where you could get the equivalent of an Ivy League education for a fraction of the cost (if a state resident). William and Mary and the University of Virginia were both on the list. W&M's tuition may be one-third that of Harvard's. It's the second oldest college in the US (older than Yale).
