I see us as merely occupying this biological machine we call the human body, but so much of it is hard wired similarly to animal instincts.

The bible contrasts the spirit with the flesh in many places. One example:

For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. Galatians 5: 17

While it is up for philosophical/theological debate, I agree that we are spiritual beings in an earthly human body rather than biological machines with a spiritual component.
