In the worst tragedy in seven years at the annual Muslim pilgrimage, 244 worshippers were trampled to death and hundreds more were hurt beneath a crush of people making their way to a ritualistic stoning of the devil.
Panic ensued when a few pilgrims fell on a bridge, and others tried to escape the push of the oncoming crowd, authorities said. Safety measures were in place at the site -- one where fatal stampedes have been frequent -- but "caution isn't stronger than fate," Saudi Hajj Minister Iyad Madani said.

In 1981, I had to go to the Jeddah airport to meet some official travelers. It was the hajj month and to say that it was mobbed would be an understatement. Most of the hadjis were from Africa and I doubt if any of them had been more than a chip shot from their home villages in their lives and had no idea how to behave when and where other people were involved. The sea of humanity kept going back and forth and it took me almost an hour to navigate through them to get to my guys in the arrivals hall. They were being met by yet another surging mass trying to get back to Burkina Faso, carrying booty not available in Ougadougou, like air-conditioners. A few years later they built a new airport so it is probably better now.

Hajj means BIG money for Saudi royals. A perfect monopoly & disasters like this won’t affect it in the slightest.
