"Most people who become cops do so because they feel called to the job. Yes, they could quit, but they feel a responsibility to protect the citizens in their cities and neighborhoods."

Please. That may have been the case in years gone by, but in my experience, it would seem that a lot of police are in it for the money and benefits, not to mention the "perks" that come with carrying a gun and a badge.

Can’t speak as to percentages, but a friend’s kid became a full fledged cop this past summer, and he’s definitely seeing it as a form of service.

On second though, I’m guessing there have to be a lot of cops who’re in it to serve. If cops didn’t feel a responsibility to the citizens, there would have been a mass exodus of the Ferguson police force. Nobody stands there, day after day, getting spit on and screamed at and listening to threats to their spouse and kids, just for money and benefits.

Cannot disagree more. Watch some episodes of Drugs, Inc. They risk their lives for what they believe in. Do a ridealong with some local cops sometime. See what their jobs are like.
