While he was pushing to legalize abortion without limits, Mario Cuomo seven times vetoed bills to restore the death penalty in New York state.
Don Imus summed up Cuomo’s arrogance best: “You don’t have a conversation with Mario Cuomo, you stand there quietly while he LECTURES you!”
Mario the Pious had a short-lived radio show after he lost in 1994. If a caller uttered the word `liberal’, Cuomo cut him off. Or he would sneer “Who CARES what you think!?” and end the call.
He will not be missed.
Cuomo’s opposition to the death penalty was well-coordinated with Bernardin’s “Seamless Garment.” Abortion and the death penalty are equally important, see? Therefore, if I favor abortion and oppose the death penalty, then I’m just as “pro-life” and just as good a Catholic as the “pro-life” people who oppose abortion and favor the death penalty.
And being for open borders is “pro-life,” even though immigrants vote 70% pro-abortion. And being for more family-destroying welfare is “pro-life.” And opposing the Reagan tax cuts was “pro-life.”
Bishops have been trying to steal the term “pro-life” from the actual pro-life movement for decades, and tack it onto the agenda of the Democrat party.
