The seas have stored most of the excess heat generated by greenhouse gases since 2000, but they are due to send it back skyward December 30, 2014 |By John Upton and Climate Central

Probing a blue abyss can be an abysmal recipe for the blues.
For every 10 joules of energy that our greenhouse gas pollution traps here on Earth, about 9 of them end up in an ocean. There, the effects of global warming bite into fisheries, ecosystems and ice. But those effects are largely imperceptible to humansas invisible to a landlubber as an albatross chomping on a baited hook at the end of a long line.
What scientists discovered in 2014 is that since the turn of the century, oceans have been absorbing more of global warmings heat and energy than would normally be expected, helping to slow rates of warming on land. What they will be talking about in 2015, and beyond, is when that trend might come to an endlikely following a routine shift in Pacific Ocean trade winds. Much of that extra sunken heat will eventually be belched back into the atmosphere by the overheating seas. The effects of ocean warming might be imperceptible to most of us, but they are far-reaching. They are driving fishing fleets further out to sea, ushering tropical fish into polar waters, and worsening flood hazards for coastal communities.

I subscribed to Scientific America for many years and anxiously awaited each new monthly edition. Some years ago they abandoned scientific method. Some years ago I canceled my subscription with a note that read, “When you once again use scientific method in your articles I will again become a subscriber.”
>> “ They certainly cant be used to get temperature readings at great depths (where the excess heat is purportedly hiding out).” <<
.
You weren’t supposed to notice that little detail.
Good, it’s freezing today.
Unfortunately Nature, the ‘scientific journal of record’ went down the same road of promoting all things ‘climate change’ also, and lost my respect some time ago
And what happens if the wrong?
“Much of that extra sunken heat will eventually be belched back into the atmosphere
Whoa there Poindexter, ease up on the sciency talk would ya. “
I guess in other words, the Earth is about to Fart! The more likely scenario (this UC Santa Cruz whose mascot is the Banana Slug) is that this guy has his bong plugged up with some bad weed.
Yes, but that was back when we had real science.
And the trigger for this to happen is?
“What they will be talking about in 2015, and beyond...”
It’s obvious that the trigger will be the 2016 US elections.
“We could use some heat in Wisconsin.”
This guy needs to look at the weather map today. It’s SNOWING in Las Vegas and maybe even Phoenix, and the LOW tonight here in the “sunny” San Francisco Bay Area will be 31 degrees! But then, unless they keep up their junk science theories, the gubimint grants will be withdrawn and they will have to find some real work, somewhere!
To quote Judge Shmales, “well, were waiting!” (Currently 18°F here in eastern Washington)
And in other news, people in hell will soon get ice water. Now a word from our sponsor.
It's a terribly wrong excuse. It doesn't explain why much of the heat is way down deep at the seafloor in pockets, but cooler towards the surface. Volcanic vents at the ocean floor explain the heat very well. The only global warming going on is natural, not caused by mankind.
Much of that extra sunken heat will eventually be belched back into the atmosphere by the overheating seas.
Its 17 degrees here. I could do with a little heat. But we’re a long way from an ocean.
Please stop spreading this BS. The Sun and our seasonal, relative position to it are the reason for all weather. Forget man’s contribution....we are in the Sun’s atmosphere, PERIOD!
Next on the agenda is to blame our population on tectonic plate shifts. SHEESH!
The prophets are false.
I used to read the magazine faithfully. It still has some mind boggling articles but they have turned left, for sure.
Global warming involves a lot of hot air - somehow I’m not surprised....
The article didnt mention that deep-sea volcanoes are the biggest contributors to global volcanic activity.
FR: Deep-sea volcanoes don't just produce lava flows, they also explode!
So imo, the alarmist author of the article didnt do his homework and overlooked that under water lava flow is probably a significant contributor to oceanic warming.
In my first Heat Transfer class many years ago, our final exam required us to calculate how long it took to cook a turkey in a 350 F oven. I explained how you could cook the turkey and let it rest for 20 minutes, but you had to then stand way back because all that cooking heat was going to be belched back out and the turkey was going to suddenly freeze, right there on the cutting board. If I recall correctly, I didn’t get 10 points for that solution. I may have even failed the course.
