POPE: UN MUST FIGHT 'GLOBAL WARMING'
the guardian ^ | 12/27/14 | j vidal

He has been called the “superman pope”, and it would be hard to deny that Pope Francis has had a good December. Cited by President Barack Obama as a key player in the thawing relations between the US and Cuba, the Argentinian pontiff followed that by lecturing his cardinals on the need to clean up Vatican politics. But can Francis achieve a feat that has so far eluded secular powers and inspire decisive action on climate change?

It looks as if he will give it a go. In 2015, the pope will issue a lengthy message on the subject to the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics, give an address to the UN general assembly and call a summit of the world’s main religions.

The reason for such frenetic activity, says Bishop Marcelo Sorondo, chancellor of the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy of Sciences, is the pope’s wish to directly influence next year’s crucial UN climate meeting in Paris, when countries will try to conclude 20 years of fraught negotiations with a universal commitment to reduce emissions.

“Our academics supported the pope’s initiative to influence next year’s crucial decisions,” Sorondo told Cafod, the Catholic development agency, at a meeting in London. “The idea is to convene a meeting with leaders of the main religions to make all people aware of the state of our climate and the tragedy of social exclusion.”

Following a visit in March to Tacloban, the Philippine city devastated in 2012 by typhoon Haiyan, the pope will publish a rare encyclical on climate change and human ecology. Urging all Catholics to take action on moral and scientific grounds, the document will be sent to the world’s 5,000 Catholic bishops and 400,000 priests, who will distribute it to parishioners.

Just how far back did you review this thread to see where the Catholic bashing abrasiveness began?

You have placed yourself over 2000 years of Catholic History and elevated your ability to interpret scripture above minds such as Thomas Aquinas and Augustine.

Yet, your writings on this thread demonstrate a very shallow understanding of Scripture and a complete inability to explain critical chapters in the Gospels.

Your positions seem largely based on irrational hatred and disdain, and certainly not Scripture.

Just which part of John 6 do you consider blasphemy?

“the Dueterocanon were included in Luther’s translation of the Bible into German”

You really don’t mind stretching credibility do you?

“included”??

The 7 books in question were set aside as “Apocrypha”, and relegated to the middle pages, between the OT & NT and weren’t even included in the Table of Contents.

This clearly set the stage for subsequent publishers to omit them completely.

In 25 years of debating this subject, I’ve never found anybody with the guts to reconcile the plain words of Christ in John 6 and Paul’s warning in 1 Cor:11.

bye bye!

For those such as you have demonstrated yourself to be, twisting the words of Paul to Satan's purpose, a closer look at 1Corinthians 11:
[17] Now in this that I declare unto you I praise you not, that ye come together not for the better, but for the worse.
[18] For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it.
[19] For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.
[20] When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord's supper.
[21] For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken.
[22] What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not.
[23] For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:
[24] And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.
[25] After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
[26] For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.
[27] Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
[28] But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.
[29] For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.
[30] For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.
[31] For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.
[32] But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.
[33] Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another.
[34] And if any man hunger, let him eat at home; that ye come not together unto condemnation. And the rest will I set in order when I come.

So we see that Paul was chasticing them for turning a gathering of the bretherin into a drunken party, and for not recognizing that Yeshua's body was broken for their healing.

Speaking of stretching credibility, did his Bible have the translation of those books or not? Since you admit that it did, what is your problem?

In 24 you have added the word “broken”, where it does not belong.

[24] And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is “BROKEN” for you: this do in remembrance of me.

Did you miss the part where Christ makes clear that the bread and wine are His Body and Blood?

And 25 through 29 you have completely ignored the words and meaning.

[25] After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
[26] For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.

25 & 26 clearly command us to drink and eat and drink the bread and wine until he comes again.

And here in 27 Christ makes it clear that the bread and wine are not merely symbolic, because if you receive it unworthily you “shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.”

[27] Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
[28] But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.
[29] For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.

Verse 29 is a rather strong punctuation regarding the consequences.

interpret scripture above minds such as Thomas Aquinas and Augustine.

Interesting you include them, for they translated 'alone' as well.

Interesting that you ignored what Luther did to those 7 books in his version of the Bible.

What, translated them? Or treated them like Jerome did. Keep searching for some offense. First it was claimed he threw them out, didn’t. Next he didn’t put them in a table of contents, so what? You aren’t a member of the the order of The Perpetually Offended are you? Looking for an Obamaphone DR Translation App?

He relegated them as Apocrypha OUTSIDE the OT and NT!!

That means he did not consider them Scriptural!

THAT is “butchering the Bible”!!!

Just like Jerome.

I look forward to your thread excoriating St Jerome for doing as Luther did. I'm sure it will be forthcoming.

And Jerome was infallible?

None is infallible but God only. Jerome was an intellectual giant for his time. His work proves that the canon wasn’t considered closed. Many scholars debated the books. Trent ended that in the Catholic church.

The canon was set in 397 and has remained unchanged through the Councils of Florence and Trent.

Christ conferred on Peter that he would be guided by the Holy Spirit, and “whatsoever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven”.

It would be ridiculous to suggest that died with Peter.

It applies only to matters of faith and morals and does not apply to math problems.

Jerome was never Pope.

How many of Jerome’s other writings do you endorse?

It was a FACT from the moment Christ conferred the keys to Peter.
