As long as voluntary, private donors fund this, I have no concern. I am certain, however, this is not the case.

Only cost $2 for a great 30-06 round.

Have they considered extending hunting season by a week or two?

This would bring IN additional revenue and avoid the expense completely.

Liberalism, the mental disorder, has no accountability or measurement, it is all feeling at the time...this expensive, waste of my $, without my permission, will be like the Chinese one child policy...unintended consequences.

--the first post in the comments says it all, IMHO--

--Shocked - I am shocked! Imagine, going out to shoot the poor deers, er, dears, with tranquilizer darts! That hurts, in case anybody was wondering. How inhumane can people be? Why did no one suggest distributing condoms to the male deer? Why must violence always be the first option? How typically American! No wonder the civilized Europeans shudder at our rambunctiousness. No, seriously, this sterilize-the-wildlife idea is another symptom of the wimpification of society. It would have been better to imitate nature and hunt the excess beasts - and donate the venison to some worthy recipients, whether the homeless, women in shelters, unhorsed cowboys , or some other cause du jour. But the chosen option robs everyone of pleasure - there will be no venison, and the male deer are denied the option of, ahem, consorting with the does. They will certainly not be singing "A doe, a deer, a female deer!" this season, or any other.--

Considering the topic of the article, I thought the first word in asterisks was apropos.

I saw a similar article a couple of months ago about this in a doctors office waiting room, some Nature magazine that was so ultra liberal it turned my stomach. Sterilizing deer! Ridiculous. Get Ted Nugent out there with his buddies and turn the meat in to a food pantry. In the same magazine was an article about a young couple who found a mouse struggling in a glue trap. They felt so bad, they freed him and took him to a vet where he was treated for mites and a few other things and he became a pet. Unbelievable.

What if the deer are pro-choice? Shouldn’t they be asked?

just kidding! I was trying to think like a liberal there for a minute.

Stupid. How long til they end up on the “endangered” list, hunting them is banned, and the Democrats say you then have no legitimate reason to own a gun. This is incredibly ridiculous.

Merry Christmas.

Several years ago, it became popular around here for hunters to give deer meat to homeless shelters and food pantries. Herd sizes were stable and the needy had plenty of meat. Naturally, we couldn’t have that. Shelters and pantries can only have USDA approved product now.

And it will turn the does into sluts.

yes, the deer hunter SPENDS cash to hunt deer, voluntarily. And only about a third of the people buying permits, ammo, orange vests and barbecue sauce get a deer.

The PETA-approved methods waste government funds that could be used to load EBT and SNAP cards.

And BAMBI never happened because of this.

“which provokes opposition from animal-welfare activists”

Yes, traumatizing and mutilating living wild animals for an idiotic idea like this is much more preferred.

the cost of killing deer en masse is estimated at 1200 per deer....based on an actual program in Princeton, NJ.

Well, having a pet moose would be kinda neat. It would certainly be a first on my block.

Arrow, or bullet - around a dollar, no cost to gov., meat feeds people, gov gets some money from licensing.

“Only cost $2 for a great 30-06 round.”

I would prefer that no one in our deer-rich neighborhood start flinging 30-06 rounds. I even presented my neighbor with a bill to replace one of our double-pane, argon filled, low-E sunroom windows after he killed it with his pump pellet rifle (he was trying to thin out a herd of squirrel).

That being said...I recently took the state “Hunter Responsibility” class which is a prerequisite for a hunting license here. I’ll be out next year with my new .308 Christmas present...thinning a herd somewhere.
