1. Do not point guns at people, particularly cops.
2. More range time for the officer is recommended.

Yep and, for all we know, the (likely low IQ) untrained perp may have been trying to shoot the cop without knowing he had to take the safety off and/or perhaps even not knowing (or forgetting) he had to chamber the first round from the magazine. But it would take just a second to remedy any forgetfulness, so the cop was right to fire in self defense.
