Canadians can be very canny. I had a conversation 13 years ago with a blind French-Canadian from Nova Scotia on an Amtrak train, and we talked arcane points of European history over Scotch.

World War I needs a lot of whiskey to be intelligible.

19th Century monarchs, 20th century revolutionaries!
19th century empires, 20th century politics!
Trench warfare, poison gas, machines guns, horses, submarine warfare, , mules, aeroplanes, bayonets charges, barbed wire, and TANKS!

A LOT of Whiskey required.
