The Empire Strikes Back: Jeff Sessions out as Budget Committee Chair
Red State ^ | December 18th, 2014 | streiff

Posted on 12/19/2014 6:52:10 AM PST by xzins

Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions is out as chair of the Senate Budget Committee.

**"Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) is giving up his bid to become the next Budget Committee chairman — deferring to Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) and eliminating the only competitive chairmanship battle in the incoming GOP Senate majority.

"Sessions has been the panel’s top Republican for the past four years but Enzi technically retains seniority over the Alabaman on the committee and said several weeks ago that he would challenge Sessions for the chairmanship."**

This is going to portrayed as a simple matter of seniority. It isn’t. That story has the same veracity and, indeed, the same source as the story that Senator Ted Cruz’s opposition to Obama’s immigration power grab led to the approval of stalled Obama nominees: Mitch McConnell.

Sessions has been serving as the top Republican on the committee for the past four years and was in line to take the chairmanship after the GOP won control of the Senate this month.

**"But since then, Sessions has undercut party leaders with his strident opposition to President Obama’s immigration action, even raising the specter of another fiscal showdown that resembles previous confrontations with the White House. Party leaders are eager to fight back against the president, but in a more measured way in line with their desire to show that they are up to the task of governing.

That has provided an opening for Enzi, whose name-out-of-a-hat seniority gives him the standing to challenge Sessions and who is pitching himself as a less-confrontational alternative.

Conservative activists say GOP leaders are backing Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) for the chairmanship because he would be a more reliable party man.

Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and other members of his team have publicly stayed out of the contest, but conservative activists nevertheless say they are quietly backing Enzi because he would be a more reliable party man.

Gaston Mooney — who served as an aide to former senator Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), who often clashed with McConnell’s leadership team — wrote in an article last week in Conservative Review: “If Sessions loses the chair of the budget committee, it is only under the orders and direction of McConnell.”"**

While Mike Enzi has a solid voting record he is a reliable tool of the Senate leadership. The hard hitting analysis that Jeff Sessions brought to the Budget Committee will now become the watered-down pap Mitch McConnell wants.

As I recall, there was a similar situation in 1985 with Senators Helms and Lugar, and Helms pulled seniority on Foreign Relations though Lugar had been the ranking member for the previous two or four years. Helms had been chairing Agriculture but switched to Foreign Relations in 1985. Then he was out as chairman in 1987 because 1986 was a huge Democrat year even before hapless voters knew of Iran-Contra.

I don;t think Sessions had a choice.

Although they both started in the Senate on the same day, the drawing of lots gave Enzi “seniority”, with lots being drawn for future cases just like this.

McConnell was determined to not give Sessions the chair, so Enzi was recruited.

Similar to how Rahm Emmanuel suddenly “remembered he always wanted to be the mayor of Chicago”, Enzi suddenly realized he wanted to be the head of the Budget Committee.

McConnell was going to use the arcane rule of the drawing of lots to establish Enzi’s faux claim to the chairmanship, which would be an embarrassment to Sessions.

Sessions is a patriot. Enzi is a lapdog for Mitch.

Sessions deserves better.

But the GOP-E has him, Cruz, and Lee in the crosshairs because they won’t buckle under to the new world order.

And that is exactly what this is all about.

America must be tamed.

Sessions is above all things a gentleman. He knew he was screwed so he decided to keep his powder dry for more important things. He is pretty low key until he gets his dander up. When the real battles come he will be in the front line, standing for the American people.

To be “fair” you need to take a look at the names on the Senate Budget Committee. Nearly every republican is a full horned RINO bought and paid for by K Street. They don’t use the toilet without permission from GOPe.

What was Sessions supposed to do according to you, stamp his feet and whine like a baby? We all knew this was coming and some of us expressed our feeling to “B!+(#” McConnell. But you can see how much good that did.

Of one thing you can be certain, no matter what conservatives do, RINOs will always say they should have done the opposite. Cruz makes noise and they say he should have worked quietly behind the scenes. Jeff Sessions works quietly behind the scenes and they say he should have made noise. Would the outcome have been any different? No. They still would have made sure that after all the work Sessions did for them while Dingy Harry held the gavel, he would be left out in the cold because that is exactly how the RINO/GOPe treat conservatives.

And here we sit, doing nothing. Ok, so not entirely nothing - at least we voted "R" because "R" is 'better' than "D", right? Right?!?! Lol. Honestly, folks, voting GOP any further is just as detrimental to the Nation as voting D. They are one and the same.

The Uniparty of the political class made a smart tactical move to consolidate its power.

What else could be expected from the Uniparty elites?

Maybe when the new more conservative Senators start next year they will be like Cruz, ignoring seniority and just doing the job they were elected to do.

First order of business is to begin changing the leadership. Time to primary the Rinos.

Unlikely. Most of them have followed B!&*H McConnell and Bonerhead by surrendering, including our own Senator-elect here in CO, Cory Gardner - ran on a Conservative platform, got elected, and IMMEDIATELY stated impeachment and gubmint shutdown were not options.

First order of business is to begin changing the leadership.

Too late - we're stuck with McConnell and Boehner. Real COnservatives like Sessions are actively being pushed out of any leadership positions, by the RINO's.

Time to primary the Rinos.

That worked real well earlier this year, didn't it? /sarc

“What was Sessions supposed to do according to you, stamp his feet and whine like a baby?”

If that’s a fancy way of saying he should have been more vocal, and called on people whom these Senators represent, to actually lobby them to keep him there, then yeah he should have done just that.

I cant get mad by proxy if he just quietly slinks off.

We keep calling the RINOs the “stupid party”. Seems to me that they preform a hell of a lot better than we are at this point.

I posted this the other day..

The GOPe backed McCain, knowing he would lose.

The GOP backed Romney, knowing he would lose.

The GOP will back another super RINO, knowing he will lose.

But look who WON because we lost?

The Chamber of Commerce

Big banks

American based multinational corporations

They want amnesty, and Obamacare, so they can shift all of the costs on the American taxpayer, while they reap all the profits.

Nice(deadly) game, if you have the money to play......Heads they win, tails they win.

Boehner & McConnell just sold America to the above-mentioned highest bidders.

I knew this was going to happen. Its a major loss for consevatives. Mike Enzi will do nothing.

I predict this is all in anticipation by Boehner and McConnell of jamming amnesty down our throats by summer.

Thank you, Waryone, for telling it like it is.

Sessions is a gentleman and a fine statesman. He knew exactly how this deck was stacked. Making a “fuss” was pointless.

It’s RINO season....time to go around them, indeed. Sen Cruz is leading by example.
