They do not understand the fragility of civilization and the constant nearness of savage nature.

Bingo! They do their best to hide in the sand. When things like race riots happen they do their best to blame it on anything but the concept that civilization is a fragile veneer. They have already rejected guns and personal responsibility, hence the idea that abject human savagery is only a short slide away is too horrible for them to contemplate. Their brain rejects the horror of that and substitutes any thing it can find.

I see this all the time when I try to justify carrying a concealed weapon to people that don't 'get it'. They refuse to see the world as dangerous because they have no defense. They simply can't handle the idea that anyone around them might want to do them harm. Because they have no way to stop it, the very idea is horrifying. So their mind rejects that horror and refused to believe in danger.

I carry my gun when I go outside to get the mail.

It's cocked and locked, but I can draw, flick off the safety, and fire it in seconds.
